Farewell to Ann Teal: A Legacy of Dedication, Adaptability, and Team Spirit

After an incredible 23 years at Lionel Hitchen, we say goodbye to one of our longest-serving team members, Ann Teal, who has been a cornerstone of multiple departments – most recently as a regulatory compliance officer. As she embarks on a well-earned retirement, we sat down with Ann to reflect on her journey, share some memories, and celebrate a career full of adaptability, camaraderie, and quiet impact.

How it all began

Ann’s entry into the business was, as she describes it, “completely by chance”.

“I called the office one day to speak to my daughter Tracey, who worked here at the time. Someone joked in the background, ‘Does your mum want a job?’ Turns out they were looking for help in the sample lab. I wasn’t looking for work, as I was managing school kitchens at the time, but I came in for an interview and started soon after.”

That simple twist of fate launched a 23-year career spanning multiple teams and locations as the company grew and evolved.

From the lab to compliance with everything in between

Ann’s early days were spent in the sample lab, but her adaptability and willingness to help saw her quickly become involved in far more.

“Me and my colleague Helen helped with anything and everything from stocktakes, QC and even wrapping sweets for presentations. I also supported Jackie Brackley in updating product specifications before we had dedicated systems like Formpak. Everything was typed up by hand and checked before being sent to customers.”

Later, she moved into regulatory compliance, where her attention to detail and steady approach became invaluable. She also spent time in customer service and R&D, always stepping in where needed.

“When someone in the customer service team was retiring, she was asked to take over her role and worked alongside Peter Hitchen.

Ann has always tried to be flexible, as if there’s a job to be done, she was happy to give it a go.”

Proud moments and achievements

Over the years, Ann’s work contributed to several key milestones, including multiple wins at the internal World Class Manufacturing (WCM) awards. To name a couple

“2024, We came second and had a day out making and decorating chocolates – we were proud of that. Another time, working with the R&D team, we won and were treated to a brilliant day out at a water park in the New Forest. Fiona and Anthony even made a video for the occasion!”

But when asked what she’s most proud of, Ann’s answer is simple and heartfelt:

“Just staying with one company for 23 years. I’ve worked in schools and other places, but I never imagined I’d be here this long. It’s gone quickly because I’ve enjoyed it.”

The people make the place.

Throughout the conversation, one theme is clear: for Ann, it was always about the people.

“The best part of the job has been the friendships. Before COVID, we’d all have lunch together, and sometimes we’d go out after work for a meal. I’ve kept in touch with many people who’ve left over the years. It’s a real community.”

Ann also took the initiative in organising team events, including Christmas meals and Secret Santas, helping to keep morale high and people connected.

“I loved organising those things. It brought everyone together, even when things were busy.”

Changes and growth

Having been with the company through significant change, Ann has seen firsthand how much has developed, from locations and systems to team size and technology.

“When I started, we were all based at Barton Stacey. There were fewer people, fewer processes, and everything was far more manual. I remember when Formpak was introduced; it was a big shift. At the time, there were just two of us working in compliance. Now, there are over ten people in the team.”

Despite all the changes, the core of what made Hitchen special has remained.

“There’s always been a family feel here. Lionel used to walk the floors and chat to everyone, and Peter, Alistair and Alison did the same. That personal touch matters.”

Words of wisdom

As she prepares to move on, Ann has some parting advice for new starters:

“Be polite, be friendly, and never say, ‘That’s not my job.’ There’s always a way to help, even if it’s just pointing someone in the right direction. And don’t be afraid to ask questions, as people are happy to help.” and remember at the end of the day we are all human

What’s next?

Though she’ll miss the everyday interactions and friendships, Ann is looking forward to having more time to herself and to staying in touch with the people she’s worked alongside for over two decades.

“It’ll be strange not coming in every day, but I’m excited for what’s next. I’m keeping in touch with everyone. You don’t just switch off 23 years overnight!”

Thank you, Ann, for your years of service, warmth, and dedication. You’ve left an indelible mark on Lionel Hitchen and in the hearts of your colleagues. You’ll be greatly missed – but never forgotten.
